BYU friend Congressman Tom Lantos dies

BYU friend Congressman Tom Lantos died yesterday of cancer at 80 years old. As the only Holocaust survivor to serve in Congress, he was the Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and was the House's staunchest supporter of human rights around the world.

In Spring 2001 he received an honorary doctorate of humane letters from Brigham Young University. According to BYU professor Earl Fry, "Tom always welcomed interns from BYU's Washington Seminar program.... In addition, whenever a government in Eastern Europe threatened to remove [Mormon] missionaries from its country, Tom would call in the ambassador from that country and urge him in very stern words to make sure the policy was changed. In almost all cases, Tom was successful."

Congressman Lantos was a great friend of the LDS Church and an advocate of human rights throughout the world regardless of race, ethnicity or religion. He will be greatly missed.
