A Moment from Eternity by Bob Layton
Modern-day pioneers have made tremendous
personal sacrifices that are no less important in building the Church of
Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints today than the early pioneers of 150
years ago. In accepting the gospel, like the early pioneers, they
have had to travel great distances to come to a land where they can take
full advantage of the opportunities the gospel offers. In every ward,
as you look around a Sacrament meeting congregation, you see members you
know have come from other lands. What you may not recognize is the
price they paid for their faith. Some fled to escape oppressive regimes,
some joined the Church to the dismay of their families, and some sold prized
possessions for pennies to raise the funds for travel. As we wonder
when the next convenient time is for a Temple trip, we should be humbled
to remember some left their native lands with little more than the clothes
they were wearing, just for the privilege of being close to the House of
the Lord.
There are more stories to tell than
could be included in one book. This record of 17 conversion stories
is intended to be representative of the stories which many others could
tell. It runs the gamut of everything from stories fraught with danger,
to sheer determination, to the tenderest of love stories. They are all
different, yet they are all the same. A spiritual thread runs though
all of them, showing the Lord's hand at work at exactly the right time.
A Moment from Eternity is a
sesquicentennial project of the Edmonton Riverbend Stake of the Church
of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
