Advantages
- respondent determines nature and amount of information
- respondent may volunteer important information
- communicate interest and trust
- easier to answer and pose less threat
- more likely to reveal respondent feelings, prejudices, perceptions
Disadvantages
- questions may take longer
- respondents may dwell on unimportant information
- may not reveal information they feel obvious, too sensitive
- interviewer must be skilled
- lengthy answers may be difficult to record
