Description:
Theory and practice of various forms of visual communication, including photography and graphics.

Objectives:

Required textbook:
Fred S. Parrish. Photojournalism: An Introduction. Belmont, CA: Wadsworth/Thomson Learning, 2002.

Grading and course requirements:

  1. Photographic or art assignments: Grading will be based on the criteria of creativity and originality, degree of insight, clarity of expression,  use of composition, light and color, subject and form.
  2. Positive class participation including individual presentations and general discussions.  Students are expected to bring in examples of good photography and artwork using newspapers, magazines, websites as sources.
  3. Attendance: Attendance will be required as in any professional work situation.  Failure to attend five classes without the instructor's approval with cause an automatic failure.
Assignments:

Personal portfolio - 200 points
Presentation of personal portfolio  - 100 points
Two photo or art assignments
1. Portraiture - 200 points (use a throw away camera)
2. News or feature, sports action - 300 points
(Grading criteria: light and color, composition, subject matter)

Group presentations (Pass/Fail): 200 points
Students will select a topic to present in the regular class time. Presentations must include photos and use a presentation software such as Microsoft Powerpoint.

May 8 Visit a display of Artwork by Vienna-born artist and Boise State University alumna Maria Thorne-Gloddeck featured in “The Many Colors of Maria Thorne-Gloddeck,” an exhibition running April 26 May 31 at the Student Union  Gallery from 7 a.m.-11 p.m. daily. Admission is free.
