Penson
School
1. "Kick off Friday" Sept. 10 - All staff and students divide into teams and play soccer for the last part of the first Friday of classes. 2. The Terry Fox Run - an annual event at Penson. Students raised over $6,000 to donate to cancer research. 3. Junior High Incentive Trip: The first junior high incentive trip was to Glacier Park Lodge to learn about glaciers, avalanches, animals of the area and to climb a mountain. 4. Rotary Excellence in Education Award was won by Mrs. Debbie Henriksen, grade 7 teacher at Penson. 5. The junior high students at Penson participated in the Gingerbread House Competition where the houses were auctioned off at the Festival of Trees. We had four houses in the auction. 6. Math Competitions Our grade 5,6,7 and 8 students competed in the Canadian National Mathematics League Competition. We were one of the 2348 schools that wrote. Several of our students achieved very good scores and received certificates for their efforts. Our grade 9 students took part in the University of Waterloo Mathematics Competition. Five of our students scored in the top 25% . We placed 5th in our zone in Alberta. 7. Scholastic Challenge 2000 In early April our grade 8 class wrote the Canadian Scholastic Achievement League Challenge. Each year thousands of students of varying abilities from across Canada are challenged to demonstrate a variety of skills in mathematics, science, language arts, history and geography, not in one specific discipline. We had 5 students score above the national average and receive certificates of merit. 8. The grade 7 Health

9. Our PD day in January was a time of fun and learning as Mrs. Roxie Rutt, a TRUE COLORS instructor, delivered a half day workshop to Penson staff. 10. Science Fair held in February was a great success. Winners are: Grade 9 Andrew Bowen

11. The grade nine students attended Career Fair, held in Hythe. Mrs. Sherry Howey of Penson has been instrumental in its conception and continuation. 12. Our grade 8 students participated in the "Kool" program held at Muskoseepi Park. 13. Winter Carnival - Students and staff were divided into teams representing different countries and competitions in the snow made for a fun day and a good break in winter weather. 14. Grade nine students participated in the P.A.R.T.Y. Program at Q.E.II. 15. All Elementary Staff participated in a Safe and Caring Schools workshop. 16. Grade nine students year end trip was in Fairmont Hot springs and area. 17. Zone Track Meet.
