Future Challenges

Peace Wapiti School Board will face a number of challenges during the upcoming years.  These include:

  • Recruitment of secondary teachers who are willing to live and work in rural areas.
  • The shift in population from rural to urban Alberta.
  • Closing of school facilities.
  • Transportation in rural areas.
The opening of the Peace Wapiti Academy in September 2001 with 225 students in grades 9 and 10 will help to serve the high density population around Grande Prairie.  Programs will extend to Grade 11 in September 2002 and to Grade 12 in September 2003.

As rural areas lose population and schools become smaller, consideration may have to be given to closing some facilities.  With the depopulation of rural areas, student transportation becomes more challenging and costly.  As distances between student pickups increase, the length of runs and the amount of time on buses also increase. The board's goal is to minimize the ride time for students and at the same time make the transportation system cost efficient.
